Diesel Basics
Chemically identical, legally different. One carries road tax and runs your trucks. The other is dyed, cheaper, and for equipment only.
On-road and off-road diesel are chemically the same ultra-low-sulfur diesel. The difference is legal, not mechanical. On-road diesel is clear and carries road tax. Off-road diesel is dyed red and skips the road tax because it is meant for equipment that never touches a public highway. Get the distinction wrong and it is a tax violation, not a performance problem.
The red dye is a legal marker, not an additive. It lets inspectors tell at a glance whether a vehicle on the road is running untaxed fuel. Running red diesel in a licensed truck carries real penalties.
Most operations need both. The licensed trucks take on-road. The excavators, dozers, generators, and light towers take off-road. The trick is keeping the two separated cleanly so the right fuel goes in the right tank. We handle that on every delivery, splitting the load so your road vehicles stay legal and your equipment stays cheap to run.
